Goose’s Great Escape (And the Picket He Loosened to Do It.)
If you have an Australian Shepherd, you already know one thing: they are smart… sometimes a little too smart.
Yesterday Goose decided it was time for an adventure.
When we got home, something looked a little off with the fence. One of the pickets had been pushed loose just enough to create what Goose apparently thought was the perfect exit door.
And sure enough… he had taken it.
As we were pulling down the street toward the house, who do we see happily trotting along the road like he owns the neighborhood?
Goose.
Tail up. Big grin on his face. Completely pleased with himself.
I wish I could say he came running straight to us like a well-trained angel dog.
Nope.
Instead, he gave us that classic Aussie look that says, “Oh good, you’re home! Want to chase me?”
For a moment my heart dropped into my stomach because seeing your dog loose near the road is every dog owner’s nightmare.
Thankfully Goose’s idea of freedom apparently only extended about half a block. After a few calls (and maybe a slightly serious “GOOSE!” voice), he came running back like nothing unusual had happened.
Meanwhile I was already imagining the new fence inspection routine that is now clearly part of our lives.
The funny part is that Australian Shepherds are known for their intelligence and problem-solving skills… and Goose proved that yesterday by apparently engineering his own little gate.
Lesson learned: if you have an Aussie, never underestimate their ability to figure things out.
Needless to say, that picket is now secured again, and Goose’s great escape adventure has officially come to an end.
At least for now.
Something tells me he’s already working on his next plan.
